JACOB SHEEP

Thanksgiving Day 2009 was an eventful one for Granite Mountain Ranch
as I welcomed the arrival of two gorgeous Jacob sheep ewes. I have
admired Jacobs from a distance for several years, intrigued by
descriptions of their somewhat unusual goat-like mannerisms and their
stunning colorations and horns. Jacob sheep are reputed to be incredibly
hardy, easy lambers with good prolifiency (usually twin). They are known
for their interesting wool that unlike other sheep does not have an outer
coat, but is all one texture. Jacobs are a bit smaller than modern
commercial breeds of sheep, and are considered to be one of the more
primitive breeds of sheep. The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy
recognizes that we are in jeopardy of losing this wonderful breed of
sheep and that more Jacob sheep breeders are necessary. Jacobs are
listed as a rare breed with the livestock conservancy.

Cha Cha and Chi Chi are not registered as of yet with the Jacob Sheep
Breeder's Association, however, I will be working on their paperwork and
registration requirements to complete their registration as foundation
flock ewes.
